First $587.5m Powerball Winner Officially Named

The $587.5 million Powerball jackpot, which was won by two ticket holders’ just days ago (see our news piece here for full details), has had the first half of its winnings claimed by the ticket holders from Missouri. After the Powerball had officially checked and confirmed the ticket, the winners have been named by local news WPTV as Mark and Cindy Hill, a fifty something couple from the small town Dearborn in Missouri. He bought a Euromillions ticket for the draw on 13th November 2012, which had an estimated jackpot of £136 / €169 million and decided, in a bid to boost his business’ Facebook page, to share the jackpot to anyone who liked the photo, should he win. Remember The New York $5 million Brothers? It Was A Scam!

Last month, we bought you the story of brothers Andy and Nayel Askhar, who won a whopping $5 million on a scratch card purchased at the parents store in Syracuse, New York. Their story was unusual as they waited six years to claim their prize, as – unlike lottery winnings on the Powerball or Megamillions which must be claimed within 90 days to a year – scratch cards prizes don’t expire until a year after the end of the game. However, it has come to light in the first few days that the ticket actually belonged to another customer of the store, and the brothers have been charged with scamming the winning ticket from its rightful owner!
